These souls are often trapped, restless, or suffering in the transitional realm between life and death. Why?
-
Unfinished business/Strong emotions: Their sudden or violent death left behind powerful emotions like fury, a sense of injustice, or deep sorrow. This anchors them to our world.
-
Lack of proper farewell: They might have died far from home, or without a chance to say goodbye to loved ones.
-
In traditional belief: A restless spirit can become a wandering ghost, causing misfortune or spiritual unrest for the living. But more importantly, they themselves are in pain and cannot reincarnate peacefully.

“Chao Du” (Transcendence & Salvation) is the solution. The ritual aims to:
-
Calm and purify: Taoist/Buddhist priests chant sacred sutras to soothe the anger, grief, and pain of these spirits. The sound vibrations and mantras are believed to have a purifying power.
-
Guide the way: The ritual creates a “spiritual pathway” or uses the power of enlightened beings (like Kṣitigarbha, the Bodhisattva of the Underworld in Buddhism, or high-ranking Taoist deities) to lead the lost souls towards the light – to a better rebirth, or to a peaceful afterlife realm.
-
Resolve grievances: Offerings (food, incense, paper money) are given to pay respect and symbolically settle any outstanding “debts” or anger, convincing the spirits to let go.
-
Restore balance: By helping these heroic but troubled souls move on, the ritual also restores spiritual harmony for the living community.

“Imagine a soldier who died in a brutal battle. His spirit has a kind of spiritual PTSD. He is trapped forever re-living his last, terrifying moments. 'Chao Du' is like intensive spiritual therapy for that soul. It helps him process his trauma, let go of his pain, and finally find peace so he can 'move on' – whether that's to heaven, nirvana, or another life.”
